I am proud to be the first leader of this new council, with all the challenges and opportunities this brings.
We are one of the largest local authority areas in the UK, with a hugely diverse geography, demography and economy. From our county town of Taunton with its Garden Town status, the Quantock’s Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, our National Park on Exmoor, with Minehead and our coastal communities along our northern coastline and Europe’s largest construction project at Hinkley Point.
The ambition for the future of Somerset West and Taunton is as big as the opportunity on offer. This new political administration is promoting emerging strategic themes of tackling the climate crisis, providing high-quality housing and increasing our commercial income and investments. Harnessing the opportunities for sustainable growth will be critical for our future success, while maximising commercial income and delivering quality homes for our communities.
I was born and raised in this part of the world and came home after leaving for University. I don’t believe there’s a better place to live and work in the country.
